If you are a real Twitter fan, you would know that there is a digital divide of opinions over the introduction of an edit button. It amounted to an ideological divide where Twitter was sitting on the fence. However, it has now switched sides.
Twitter confirmed that it is working on methods so that tweets can be edited. It was last year that Twitter started to tinker with the app in a bid to introduce the tweet editing mode, and this will be tested in Twitter labs, interestingly called “Twitter Blue Labs.” According to Twitter, Twitter Blue subscribers, who are subscribed to the premium version of Twitter, can now realistically hope to see the edit tweet button in the next few months.
There was the news that Elon Musk, who needs no introduction, had bought a sizeable 9.2% chunk of Twitter shares and bought himself a seat on the board. In his characteristic fashion, the billionaire let out the secret where he asked his followers if they wanted an edit button on Twitter. The poll was heavily in favour of adding the edit button, with 73.6% of respondents replying that they did.
Over time, Twitter has exhibited a willingness that is almost novel about shaping the microblogging platform according to user feedback, so it is going to be interesting to view what takes place as the test commences. While it is easy to know if there are strong opinions about the editing of tweets, it is a great deal harder to know the actual percentage.
Some power users of Twitter have been asking for an edit button for years, while there are others who have misgivings about harassment and misinformation rife on an already hard-to-manage social media app.
