The massively scalable MySQL database provider PlanetScale announced a slew of new upgrades to revamp its services beyond its simple database functionalities and includes new features to better customer experience.
With the new PlanetScale Portals, customers can duplicate the existing data to any other Amazon Web Service region. This would allow companies with databases in Europe to have their read replicas to customers in Asia. This is PlanetScale’s first stint with reading replicas that are automated.
Before this upgrade, customers used an external device to replicate, but now, the inbuilt feature gives away all the complexities and also utilises the monitoring feature and dashboard of Planetscale.
Another new feature is known as Insights, which provides users with a way to understand how their queries are functioning without the need for any third-party application.
PlanetScale Connect is another feature that uses the Airbyte connector, which is open-source and lets users easily move and extract data across different platforms such as BigQuery, RedShift, and Snowflake for interpretation analysis. Due to the availability of continuous sync in PlantScale, the database remains updated without corrupting any of the produced data. They are also planning to associate with firms like Fivetran.
“The future database” manifesto was released last week. Many developers expressed a lukewarm response to this. However, the general trend seems to be positive. This includes creating databases that are easy to use, serverless, and highly reliable. They also want to make the new database cross-compatible, with an option to turn it off with maximum scalability.
