According to patents revealed by the Financial Times, Meta seems to be in the works of developing technology that will allow them to track and analyse people’s facial expressions and eye movements as they traverse the metaverse.

The metaverse is being referred to as the future version of the internet that individuals may access largely through immersive technologies such as virtual and augmented reality, which require specific headgear. Meta is a metaverse evangelist, having rebranded from Facebook back in October to reflect its objective of becoming a metaverse corporation.

The FT identified certain patents referencing eye-tracking technology, which could be used to sharpen images within a VR headset based on where the user is looking.

Meta global affairs executive Nick Clegg recently told the Financial Times that eye-tracking data from the metaverse might help advertisers understand if consumers interact with their advertisement.

The Financial Times said that it discovered a patent outlining how sensors within a headset would detect a user’s facial expressions in order to “adapt media content” for them. While this statement is a bit vague, one possible use would be for a user’s virtual avatar to mirror their real-life facial emotions.

Technology specified in corporate patents is not always developed. A Meta representative told insider that while they don’t comment on particular coverage of their patents or their rationale for filing them, it’s essential to remember that patents don’t necessarily address the technology utilised in their goods and services.

Among the patented technology is, a “magnetic sensor system” meant to be worn around the chest and a picture analyzer capable of recreating skin textures.

Such technologies will not only improve how realistic virtual experiences are, but will also assist the corporation in selling products to customers. Meta has said unequivocally that commerce, not hardware, will be the true revenue generator for the metaverse.
