Facebook Releases Instagram Reels In Singapore, Its New Tiktok Rival

Facebook has launched its own version of the short video app rival TikTok in more than 50 countries. The social media giant has embedded a new feature called Reels within its popular app, Instagram. In Singapore, the feature has been made publicly available after Reels was officially launched on October 27.

Instagram Reels will allow users to record and edit 15-second video clips with audio. Users can also add visual effects just like TikTok. The “Reels” can be shared among Instagram followers under a dedicated section called Reels in Explore, or as the Story feature where the post remains available for 24 hours.

The launching took place days after Microsoft announced its plans to acquire TikTok’s US operations from China’s ByteDance. According to sources, ByteDance was forced to agree to divest TikTok partially after the White House threatened to ban it and other Chinese apps over data security concerns.

Facebook started testing Reels in Brazil in November 2018 and later in France, Germany, and India. India was the biggest market for TikTok before it was banned by the Indian Government following a border clash with China.

Facebook has a long history of copying competitive services. Earlier in 2018, it launched a TikTok knockoff called Lasso that did not get much traction and closed down in July. The stark similarities between Reels and TikTok led TikTok CEO Kevin Mayer to call it a “copycat product” while Instagram’s VP of product, Vishal Shah stated, “inspiration for products comes from everywhere”.
