The parent company of the tech giant- Google- Alphabet Inc. has launched Isomorphic Laboratories that will use AI for drug discovery. This company is based in London. It will leverage the success of another Alphabet Subsidiary- Deep Mind, acquired by Google in 2014. This company used artificial intelligence to study amino acid sequences and predict the 3D structure of a protein. This new venture is supposed to reimagine the whole drug discovery process from the ground up and further research the various fundamental mechanisms revolving around life, as per CEO Demis Hassabis.
The company is named Isomorphic as there might be a mapping between information science and biology, which the company aims to research, according to Hassabis. The companies’ operations will be separate and will collaborate only when relevant.
The aim is to find cures for some of the most deadly diseases in the world. Hassabis said in a statement that the pandemic has highlighted how vital the contributions of scientists and clinicians have been.
They view themselves as pioneers in the emerging “digital biology” field and want to usher in a new age of medical breakthroughs. They also plan to partner with pharmaceutical and biomedical companies using AI to make new medical discoveries and advancements.
