According to a Rackspace Technologies survey, organisations explore advanced cloud solutions but face skill shortages. Rackspace Technology, a leading end-to-end multi cloud technology solutions company, released the Multicloud Annual Research Report 2022. The report finds that organisations are becoming more comfortable with “Cloud 2.0” innovations, even as they struggle to hire and retain IT talent.

77% of IT decision-makers say a lack of talent prevents adopting new cloud development methods, despite cloud development being a top priority for organisations (56% don’t see themselves owning a corporate data centre in the next five years).

According to the report, organisations’ cloud priorities are shifting from “basics” like agility (30%) and scalability (26%) to security (46%) and compliance (46% ). 36% More than half of IT professionals want to invest in hyperscale providers, while 38% are interested in edge technologies and 53% in containers.

Jeff DeVerter, Rackspace Technology’s Chief Technology Evangelist, said the cloud is no longer a shiny new object. “Almost no organisation is not currently transforming itself via the cloud,” he said. IT expertise is the biggest impediment to this transformation. As organisations lose legacy infrastructure and push the cloud to perform more, they’ll rely on external expertise.

IT talent is hard to find and keep

53% of IT leaders cite talent shortages as a critical business challenge, far outnumbering inflation (48%) or product shortages (36%). 25% companies emphasise training and development (40%) and hybrid/flexible/work-from-home schedules to recruit IT talent (32% ). 21% offer significant starting salaries or raises, 18% offer signing bonuses, and 13% use sign-on retention agreements.

The cloud’s size is growing

DeVerter noted a shift in cloud discussion away from table stakes like agility and scalability and toward containers and edge. People are eager to close corporate data centres. They are also more risk-taking.

According to the poll, most respondents use AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. 70% have identified new uses for single-tenant and private cloud infrastructure, and 54% plan to use serverless apps. 31% of respondents use serverless technology to automate workflows, scale IoT apps, enable virtual assistants/chatbots, and operate SaaS.

49% said the cloud increases consumer experience and ease of use, 44% said it permits faster testing and deployment of new goods and services, and 37% said it gives endless processing and storage. 35% said it helps them grow their product/service offerings; 33% said they could scale up and down, depending on demand.

Outside expertise is required owing to security issues

The most crucial feature to consider when choosing a cloud environment is the security (46%), followed by compliance (36%), flexibility/agility (30%), and scalability (30%) (26% ). (26% ). Companies also use external partners for security concerns. More than half of respondents say security is the biggest serverless challenge (52%). DeVerter said skill and security statistics tell a fascinating picture when combined. As companies attempt to hasten their cloud transformation projects, approximately 85% of our research respondents have serverless applications. They also have a skills shortfall, which hinders them from being proactive without external partners.
