NetEase Inc. is a Chinese gaming giant about 1/10th of the size of Tencent, but with big ambitions. It has spent over 10 years in the shadow of Tencent but is now reaching out to independent game developers and betting big on creative talent. 

Tencent has a reputation for being business-minded, but NetEase dances to a different beat. Its primary focus is on the gaming industry, and now it has surpassed Activision Blizzard Inc. and Electronic Arts. Inc in terms of revenue based on its reputation of backing developers and creative talent. 

NetEase positions itself as anti-Tencent and is a haven for studios that have a serious focus on games. In contrast, Tencent is juggling a fintech enterprise as well as a social media enterprise. Founder William Ding’s mantra, “embrace your inner geek,” finds resonance with game studios around the world, as both Tencent and NetEase step up activities on the international scale in a bid to escape the crackdown by the Chinese Government. 

The Chinese gaming sector is worth $44 billion, and NetEase’s rise as a competitor to Tencent gives a fresh window to global gaming developers, urging them to focus on creativity and originality. As a target, in the next 5 years, NetEase is looking to have its name on as much as a quarter of fresh AAA releases in the market on a global scale. It will have a hand in everything, from investment to self-development and publishing. For NetEase, content and talent are sacrosanct.
