Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram has announced that the times are changing and with it, the app also must change. Instagram is not just a photo-sharing app anymore, he said in a year-end video while sharing plans for the upcoming year.
Mosseri said that they’re going to rethink what Instagram is and double down their focus on videos on Instagram. They will be consolidating all their video formats around the Reels feature of the app and then grow more on it.
The fact that Instagram is revising its video strategies on the app can be anticipated from its latest moves regarding its video features. It recently combined the features of IGTV video and feed video into a single resulting feature – Instagram Videos. Now you can post videos as long as 60 minutes on the feed – something that could earlier only be done on IGTV.
Now you can add videos as long as 60 minutes by simply tapping on the plus (+) icon at the top right corner of their home page. The main page video previews are now as long as 60 seconds and 15 seconds if they are an advertisement.
Instagram has taken a step further to rebrand the IGTV app which is now called the Instagram TV app, although it works as it used to.
Mosseri also said that Instagram will be more focused on messaging from now on. He said that messaging is one of the most important and primary ways people connect in the online world and that Instagram needs to accept it as the primary form of communication. Mosseri said in the video saying that Instagram will not only be working on controls but also expand more on transparency.
