Instagram, the giant social media company, has recently updated the app’s time settings for users to spend more time on the app.
The tech company had the most interesting feature updated in 2018 that limited the time a user could spend on the platform. Before now you could choose to spend as low as 5 minutes on the app by changing your time setting.
The recently updated feature urges the users to change and increase the time setting on the app. The new time limit is 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours in a day.
The users have reported that they get a pop-up on the page that urges them to change their settings, stating that the initial time limit is no longer supported. The app has been sending reminders on its page to change the setting for some time now and the only way users have been able to come out of updating the settings is by force closing the app.
The time-limiting feature was introduced in response to the criticism the tech companies faced for its negative impact on the well-being of users. Representatives of the company have said that the change is brought to empower users to make decisions about their time spent on the platform.
However the decision to empower the users is at odds with their recently added feature, Take a Break, that the user could use to remind them about the excess time spent on the app. Though the extra time spent will not hurt most people, the company’s decision seems to come more out of concern of people not spending enough time on the app than actually empowering its users.
