To welcome Christmas 2021, the Walt Disney Company has already released a Christmas-themed ad almost 51 days ahead of Christmas. “Stepdad” is the new ad film created by Disney created by the team sitting in-house in Disney. It is a 90-second ad and a story of new step-dad Mike and his endeavours to win over his stepkids, Max and Ella. He tries to bond with them by indulging in various Christmasy activities like building a snowman, watching movies with them, and even FaceTiming with the family. Of course, something goes wrong with the gingerbread house. But all is well that ends well, and so it does in this heartwarming little ad.
This ad is a sequel to last year’s ad – Lola. Disney already has Marvels and Star Wars, and now they seem to be working on an extended universe of Xmas ads.
Regarding advertising, the Christmas season is to the Americans what the Super Bowl is to the British. John Lewis began it all and remained to this day the standard to compete against all storytelling stunts. But with the new streaming, Disney is now also trying to become a Christmas heavy hitter.
