Boston Dynamics’ Robot Gets Launched By Hyundai In The Metaverse

Hyundai has been willing to invest in the acquisition of Boston Dynamics, which had valued the robotics design firm at more than $1B. Unsurprisingly, robotics is gaining center-stage attention with the automaker’s CES presentation for this week.

In the previous month, Hyundai had shown a glimpse of a four-wheeled modular mobility platform—the Mobile Eccentric Droid. And today, the corporation sketched out further plans for the near future with its recent ‘metamobility’ concept.

Although not much information has been revealed about this idea, for now, a generic plan was offered under the title ‘Expanding Human Reach’. This idea aims at finding a position for robotics and mobility in a virtually real metaverse. It’s difficult to clarify the concept at such an early stage, but primarily there will be the usage of hardware to cater as a sort of physical-world proxy for virtual reality’s interactions.

According to Chang Song, Hyundai’s Motor Group President, metamobility means that time, distance and space will all become immaterial. By linking robots with the metaverse, we all can travel freely between virtual reality and the real world. He further added that robots will prove to be extensions of our physical senses, which will allow us to enrich and reshape our day-to-day life with metamobility.

Hyundai has also launched ‘New Mobility of Things’. This will move inanimate objects using robotics. Under this banner of ‘New Mobility of Things’ is a product Plug & Drive (PnD). This individual wheel unit has smart braking, steering, suspension hardware, in-wheel electric drive, and camera and lidar sensors.

There were various applications for this PnD model. It included an individual transport system which could take a person towards a waiting bus. This will provide that first- and final-mile public travel by cutting out the single-occupant 4-wheelers on roads.

Another concept showcased by Hyundai was ‘Drive & Lift’ (DnL) for lifting objects.
